Blanket Magazine » Blanket logo design {uncovering Blanket}

Last Friday in our new section on the blog ‘Uncovering Blanket’ I discussed the naming of Blanket but today I am going to show you the developmental stage of our masthead and logo after we had chosen our name. Designing the logo is just as important as choosing the name. Once you decide you are stuck with it – so you better get it right! Luckily Tanya did just that for Blanket when she designed our logo.

The Blanket logo – initial concepts and developmental stage…

This logo design reminded me of the logo for Hopscotch films. We liked the idea of free flowing joined letter forms and the final version of the logo ended up being a much more polished version of this initial concept.

This logo was actually the initial choice for a while – but the capital letters seemed too serious and unfriendly – not the image we wanted to portray for Blanket who we saw as a welcoming community for all emerging artists. So it was back to the drawing board…

Although many have guessed that the Blanket logo may be a version of the typeface Canstop it’s not. At the time Tanya was going through a phase in her career where she was experimenting with making a lot of her own typefaces and as you can see this is uniquely hers!

“I wanted the Blanket logo to feel friendly, unique and eye catching. I was inspired by how one might roll up a blanket or rug, I found the shape created by that rolled up blanket kinda created a lowercase b, depending on how you looked at it. So using a circle I endeavored to created that particular shape and then based the rest of the letter forms on the circle. Another important aspect was that each letter is connected to the next, although each letter is quite different, they all have one purpose.”

By taking an initial typeface and adding a series of circles Tanya was able to create a logo with more rounded edges – and ultimately a much more friendly Blanket logo.

Once the initial concept for the logo was taking shape we needed to take into consideration other important design elements such as making the logo stand out on the cover of a magazine or other promotional material. The logo continued to be developed and with just a little more tweaking here and there our final logo took shape to the logo we all know and love today : )

Next Friday I will let you in on some of the ‘pinch myself moments’ I’ve had while running Blanket…

Enjoy your weekend!
